Which MCU Character Did Timothee Chalamet Almost Play?

Missing out on landing a prominent role in a film franchise cannot be an easy thing for an actor to go through, but the harsh reality of Hollywood is that this happens all the time. Whether it is with the MCU, DC, or the Fast & Furious movies, these coveted roles can only go to one person, and missing the train to box office stardom is something that plenty of performers experience.

Timothee Chalamet is quickly becoming a popular face in Hollywood, and he has had plenty of success come his way. He has, however, missed out on playing a massive role in the MCU. In fact, missing out on this role wound up costing him millions, as well.

Let’s take a look and see which MCU character Timothee Chalamet was in the running for!

He Auditioned For Spider-Man

When it was announced that Spider-Man was coming to the MCU, there was a lot of buzz about which actor would be taking on the role. We had already seen Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the role, and the MCU knew that they had to nail the casting decision. During this time, none other than Timothee Chalamet was in contention for the role of Spider-Man.

There were loads of actors who would have loved to book the gig, but the role could only go to one person. Chalamet was in the running early on, even reading for the part multiple times.

He would talk about his experience, saying, “I read twice and I left sweating in a total panic. I called my agent, [UTA’s] Brian Swardstrom, and I said, ‘Brian, I thought about this a lot and I have to go back and knock on that door and read again,’ and he told me the story of Sean Young and how in an attempt to become Catwoman had scared everyone away when she showed up at the studio gates in costume.”

Despite the powers that be in the MCU showing plenty of interest, the audition process to play Spider-Man was not an easy one. Chalamet had some solid roles under his belt by that point, including Interstellar, but this would not be enough to get him the job.

Marvel, however, ultimately found the right man for the gig.

Tom Holland Gets The Role

Being one of the most popular characters in history, it makes sense that the competition to play Spider-Man on the big screen would be a fierce one. Despite the amount of talented people auditioning for the job, Tom Holland proved to be the right choice by the MCU some time ago.

As we got to see in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland is both a good Peter Parker and a good Spider-Man. It is important to nail both aspects of the character, and Holland has been sublime in the role, causing a legitimate debate between fans about him being the best live-action version of the character.

Since 2016, Tom Holland has been able to appear in five MCU movies, including two solo films. During this time, four of the five movies that he appeared in crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, with Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing film of all time, according to Box Office Mojo.

That is an incredible amount of success that Holland has found, and it’s all thanks to landing the role of a lifetime in the biggest film franchise on the planet.

Despite missing out on the role, Chalamet has been gaining a ton of steam in recent years, and movie studios have been taking notice. It has certainly caused the fans to wonder if he will eventually take on a superhero role at some point.

His Superhero Future

Superhero movies are usually a guaranteed way to crack a global scale of fame and to rake in loads of cash, but these roles are few and far between. Despite missing out on Spider-Man, plenty of people believe that Chalamet could be a perfect fit for a number of superhero roles later on down the road.

Earlier this this year, rumors were circulating that he could be in contention to play Robin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but nothing substantial came of this. However, it was another sign that he could find himself in the world of superheroes down the line.

At just 24 years old, Chalamet has a lot of opportunities that will be coming his way. In 2021, he will be starring in Dune, which has potential to become a box office smash, according to IMDb. People will be keeping a close eye on how that film pans out.

He may have missed out on Spider-Man, but Chalamet still has plenty of time to land an even bigger gig.
